Chris Sowder is the Director of Finance at the PenFed Foundation, where he leads the financial oversight of the organization and its related programs. He plays a central role in managing the Foundation’s Veteran Entrepreneurial Funds, financial reporting, and strengthening relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners.
Chris brings over two decades of experience in financial leadership, with a track record of helping growing businesses navigate critical early-stage decisions. Prior to joining the Foundation, he worked with multiple high-growth startups, advised on venture fundraising, and led accounting and finance functions in both for-profit and nonprofit settings.
Growing up in Hampton Roads, Virginia—a region rich with military history—Chris developed an early appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans and their families. Over the years, he has worked closely with veteran-owned startups and finds fulfillment in helping servicemembers transition successfully into civilian life. Outside of work, Chris enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a B.S. in Accounting from George Mason University and an MBA from Georgetown University.
