Helping Raise Service Dogs

The PenFed Foundation has partnered with Canine Companions, the nation’s first and most successful service dog organization, which provides highly trained dogs free of charge to veterans and others with a disability. Founded in 1975, the Santa Rosa, California based nonprofit has already placed more than 8000 service dogs.

Raising One at a Time

Our unprecedented partnership is designed to spread awareness about the extraordinary healing power of service dogs and the amazing skills they can perform to give greater independence to their handlers.

Service dogs can only be trained one at a time, which is why Canine Companions relies on volunteer puppy raisers who socialize the pups starting at eight weeks of age and teach them basic obedience commands until they’re about 18 months old. No dog training experience is necessary to be a puppy raiser—just a heartfelt desire to give back to the community in the most rewarding way possible.
